The software stack for the Internet of Things

It’s an exciting time in Wi-Fi. This year, 802.11ac will emerge from its long gestation to supplant 802.11n as the Wi-Fi physical layer you use. Just as importantly, the applications running on Wi-Fi continue to grow in diversity, and we’re witnessing a veritable Cambrian explosion of uses for Wi-Fi to accomplish almost everything.
 
Many “things” in the Internet of Things connect to Wi-Fi to find their brains. Wi-Fi is the network on-ramp, but it is by no means the end of the story. Not surprisingly, there is way more to connecting things than just getting an IP address and packets flowing.
 
Inside Aerohive, we’ve sketched out a model for how the world fits together. It’s the work of a group that includes Arun Goel, a brilliant colleague and product manager, and Changming Liu, our CTO. I shared the sketch of a model with O’Reilly, and it was interesting enough to run on the O’Reilly Radar, their emerging technology blog.
