It’s an exciting time in Wi-Fi. This year, 802.11ac will emerge from its long gestation to supplant 802.11n as the Wi-Fi physical layer you use. Just as importantly, the applications running on Wi-Fi continue to grow in diversity, and we’re witnessing a veritable Cambrian explosion of uses for Wi-Fi to accomplish almost everything.
Many “things” in the Internet of Things connect to Wi-Fi to find their brains. Wi-Fi is the network on-ramp, but it is by no means the end of the story. Not surprisingly, there is way more to connecting things than just getting an IP address and ![]()

Inside Aerohive, we’ve sketched out a model for how the world fits together. It’s the work of a group that includes Arun Goel, a brilliant colleague and product manager, and Changming Liu, our CTO. I shared the sketch of a model with O’Reilly, and it was interesting enough to run on the O’Reilly Radar, their emerging technology blog.
