School district chooses 802.11ac to meet technology goals

Similar to many school districts across the nation, Franklin Public Schools was facing the requirement to move to online testing by the 2014-2015 school year. If that wasn't enough, the Massachusetts-based District also built a brand-new 300,000 square foot high school and rolled out a 1:1 program in the last year. The need for truly controller-less Wi-Fi with robust enterprise features was an understatement.

With great price performance and to set the stage for current and future technology, the District chose Aerohive's 802.11ac access points. Students use Gigabit Wi-Fi enabled Chromebooks and the District is finding more and more ways to leverage mission-critical Wi-Fi from Aerohive.

In this how-to video, Aerohive Principal Systems Engineer Rich Korb will explain how to request and install a public server certificate on an Aerohive RADIUS server.  Public server certificates are desired when configuring an 802.1X SSID and eliminate the need to deploy the self-signed certificates to machines in your organization.

When one of the largest community colleges in the nation required enterprise Wi-Fi, Montgomery College turned to Gartner Group for some insight. On top of undertaking a major rollout and upgrade of the existing wireless, the College needed a complete solution with the ability to easily segment users, devices and access going forward.

Now, Montgomery College has comprehensive Wi-Fi and students now can use technology in a variety of ways, including using mobile carts, specialized wireless science equipment and even working wirelessly in outdoor classroom environments. The biggest surprise has been how departments, students and faculty are embracing wireless technology and using the network in ways the IT team hadn't even envisioned.

Thanks and giving at the Hive

Here at the Hive we had the enjoyable project of rallying the troops in order to give back this past month. We organized our annual food drive to benefit a local food bank, Second Harvest. In typical Aerohive fashion, we turned it into a contest to encourage some friendly competition and gather as many pounds of food as possible!

Our goal was to collect 450 pounds of food and we divided the Bees by team captains and assigned a point system by type of food collected in order to motivate us to bring in the "most needed" items for Second Harvest this year. Juice boxes earned the highest points (at 6 points per pack), with the lowest points (1 point per can) rewarded for canned vegetables!

Congratulations to team captain Jenni Adair, whose team earned over 1200 points and must have brought in quite a number of fruity beverages!

Below are some snapshots of the loot gathered from our food drive! If you want to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and join our cause, you can add to Aerohive's donations and contribute online here.

School near Mexico City sets example for digital learning

It's one thing to recognize your infrastructure needs some updating, and it's an even different challenge to set up robust Wi-Fi in Mexico, where even finding a reliable Internet provider can admittedly be an enormous obstacle. So when Colegio Cristóbal Colón (CCC), a PreK-12 school located just outside of Mexico City, wanted to implement campus-wide Wi-Fi, it turned to Aerohive to not only provide reliable infrastructure, but also enable enterprise features to help manage its mobile technology goals.

Now the CCC campus, part of a global network of La Salle schools all around the world, can boast having one of the largest WLANs north of Mexico City and is considered a leading use case among its sister schools. CCC is using features like Bonjour Gateway to manage Apple devices and band steering to maximize throughput.

To learn more about the deployment and see what's coming in phase two, check out the full case study here.

The Hive gets moving for a good cause

After all that turkey and pie, Aerohive decided to organize a Post-Turkey Day 5K the week after Thanksgiving, to get the body moving for a good cause!

We are happy to report the Post Turkey Day 5K was a huge success! We had runners from our headquarters location, as well as a few runners at remote offices who created their own event. Our goal was  to raise money for our Family Giving Tree charity that we sponsor each holiday season.

Each participant could earn tickets for a raffle at the end of the race, and the more participation, the more tickets earned! Prizes included an iPad mini, gift cards, a Fitbit, and more! Tickets were earned for running the event, dressing up in Aerohive gear and apparel, giving a donation to Family Giving Tree, and for best action photo!

Here are our highlights:

  • Congrats to Sarah Knauf for best photo and dress (first picture below)!
  • Of course, 5K was not enough for Dean… he took a group of reps and extended the run by two miles…Jeff Tarlton was lucky to make it back alive!
  • Dave Rogers battled through an early cramp and finished the route. Nice job Dave…he's never quit anything in his life.
  • Thanks to Robert Biala for being our Aerohive photographer - thanks for his photos in this post!

The amount of fun was worth the two days of pain and recovery! Keep an eye out for our next event!

Sometimes, it’s just hard to shop for a geek. (My family complains about this every year, starting about now.) So, to help out our readers, our blog team put out a call to our fellow busy bees at Aerohive so that we could bring you a geek-friendly gift list.

If you don’t like what we came up with, put your own suggestion in the comments.

 Our rules:

  • It has to be electrical. Without circuits, it’s probably not tech.
  • Practicality is only a secondary consideration.
  • Other than that, make your case!

So, what did we come up with? A lot! Based on the wide-ranging submissions, I've split the list up into six separate blogs: HomeCar & Audio; Phones & LocationWearables & Photography; Toys; and Airplanes.

Enjoy our first installment on gadgets to make your home life a little better.

~~~~~~~~~~
After spending the day in the office, most of us spend most of the rest of our time at home. When I first moved to Silicon Valley, having a “wired” home was what you aspired to. Now that Wi-Fi is cheap and accessible, not surprisingly, many of the home appliances we are after are also Wi-Fi clients.
Music, the rhythm of our lives. And a way to stop listening to your co-workers. But what is the best way to deliver that sweet, sweet, stream of ones and zeroes into your ear canal? We have some ideas, of course.
LOOKING COOL WHILE TUNING OUT
Gift Idea: Beats Studio Wireless Over-Ear Headphone (2 votes!)
Who wants it: Amanda Henry and Julia Ortega, Marketing
Why do they want it: (Amanda) "Why do I want this decadently priced gift? There's the obvious reason, which is that Beats will make my gym workouts so much more pleasant by ditching wires and giving me a stylish look. Then there's the not-so-obvious: I have kitties and they are obsessed with anything dangly (e.g. earphone wires) and I can't watch my videos on my Kindle with a cat attached to my face."
(Julia) "They took the words right out of my mouth. "The new Beats Studio wireless Bluetooth headphones are perfect for silencing your critics, wherever you are.”  Perfect for everyday activities such as: walking the dog, working out at the gym, designing awesome holiday cards, and simply tuning out anyone I do not want to hear!  [Editor’s note: I hope that doesn’t include me!]"
Many devices “predicted” the smartphone by showing what you could do with small computers and touchscreens. I think I still have an old Compaq iPAQ lying around the house, which I used to browse the web while watching TV before Apple even dreamed of the iPhone. Not surprisingly, the next step in the evolution of the smartphone is to let that chunk o’ touchscreen glass interact with the world around it.
Here's our lineup for gifts for the world around you(r) phone:
Time for that more esoteric contribution I mentioned in my previous installment: Airplanes.
Our Buyer's Guide for tech geeks has thus far covered gadgets that make your Home life a little better,  Car & Audio gadgets, Location-awaregadgets, Photography & Wearablesdevices and Toys
And, because I’m writing this blog, this final post in our holiday gift guide is dedicated to an entire category of aviation-related stuff! I had to come up with the right mix of gifts that reflected both the immense expense of aviation as well as the unparalleled satisfaction you get by doing something you just can’t do any other way.
COME FLY WITH ME
Gift Idea: A zero-G airplane flight ticket
Who wants it: Matthew Gast, Product
Why does Matthew want it: "Despite childhood dreams, I am not likely to be an astronaut. For a mere fraction of the multi-million dollar cost of spaceflight, though, you can experience weightlessness here on earth. Gift Idea: Volair Flight Sim Seat
Who wants it: Matthew Gast, Product
Why does Matthew want it: “For a long time, the computer I wanted was always about $5,000, and I consoled myself that it got better every year. Well, for $4,000, you can now buy a computer plus a mostly-realistic flight simulator controls, including three 28” monitors. At $125 per hour, this is yours for the cost of a little over 30 hours of flight time. Additionally, I like the irony that the dream flight simulator rig arrives at your home through ground shipping only."
Probably the toughest Wi-Fi on the planet
$
Wondering how to test the toughness of the new Aerohive outdoor 802.11ac AP? Easy. Make it complete one of the toughest obstacle courses on the planet. Now that’s an extreme deployment of Wi-Fi.
Take one AP1130, strap it to your colleague's back, take it through 13 miles of mud, electrocutions, submersion and bashing, and see how’s it feeling at the end… conclusion: The AP1130 fared much better than we did!
Check out the video here:
While not the most conventional testing method of an outdoor unit, it was certainly a fun one!
Kudos my teammates, we all survived…sort of. Left to right: Me, Ashley Nurcombe, Gregor Vucajnk, Lisa and Neil McRae, Alain Luxemburg, Keith Mcintyre, Laetitia Chiragarhula, Roberto Zurita, Lee Worwood, Jade Kaber. Paul Hennin arrived late so missed the team mugshot.
Extreme Wi-Fi warrior: This 802.11ac outdoor AP is TOUGH
$
We all tend to rely on Wi-Fi for network access today, but increasingly the network itself is relying on Wi-Fi to provide backhaul connectivity between campus buildings or sites. Where previously enterprise Wi-Fi and point-to-point (PTP) would typically be two separate technologies, we now see more and more enterprise Wi-Fi vendors utilizing their existing solution to supply Wi-Fi for both scenarios, creating a unified wireless infrastructure.
For organizations this means that a single management platform can be used to design, deploy, and support both indoor and outdoor wireless deployments.
Up to the task?
So, should enterprise vendors really produce backhaul connectivity solutions for organizations? Their solutions are surely best left to the office and classrooms of the world? We think not…
We developed the AP1130for two reasons:
  1. To provide high-speed Wi-Fi to every mobile user, device and application, regardless of location.
  2. To create highly resilient, high-speed backhaul connectivity between buildings or campuses.
The AP1130 boasts some pretty cool functionality that makes it ideal for PTP connectivity:
  • First, we implemented visual and audible tuning mechanisms that make alignment and tuning simple.
  • Secondly, we added a directional antenna to our portfolio to ensure highly focused signal between two APs, increasing bandwidth potential.
  • Next, mix up the power options. The AP is equipped with both PoE and DC, so go ahead and use a solar panel for your AP … unless you live in England like I do, and we see the sun approximately five times a year … optimistically speaking.
  • Then, load it up with Aerohive’s co-operative control protocol that we use in all of our wireless products, creating highly survivable mesh connectivity with no single points of failure – critical for PTP.
  • Finally, place all of this amazing capability into a ruggedized yet lightweight chassis, making it easy to install…if you’ve ever installed an outdoor unit at any kind of height you are going to appreciate the weight reduction!
When the going gets TOUGH ...
What’s a good distance for the AP1130? For the fun of it (sounded fun in theory), we decided to strap an AP1130 to our back and run 13 miles through mud, submersion, ice, electroshocks and more…see the video. Want to see some real-world deployments of Aerohive's outdoor APs? Read here.
Ready for the outdoor PTP challenge? Absolutely!
We are really excited to add the enhanced PTP functionality to our outdoor units as it gives organizations a single platform for both indoor, outdoor, and everything in-between Wi-Fi.
In my job, I interact with customers in many professions and industries. I get to see how their company creates, markets, and/or sells their product. From diapers to automobiles to educated minds, every company, program, or school has their own way of doing things and getting their product to market.
As an inquisitive mind, this is far and away the most favorite part of my job. A close second is seeing how these same customers use our products in innovative ways to solve their day to day problems and do those jobs better. A good example of this came up a few years ago when I was visiting a local private school and got to experience, first hand, how my customer utilized Aerohive's mapping and RTLS services to solve a problem, save money, and short circuit bullying all in one swoop.
It's a great story of using a feature in innovative ways.
I was still fairly new to my job at Aerohive at the time, and was making the circuit meeting Aerohive's existing customers in my territory. I was invited to speak on behalf of Aerohive at a local school to a gathering of local school IT managers.
I arrived a bit early to familiarize myself with the environment and to introduce myself to the host, a long time Aerohive customer (who we will call Mr. K for this story). While we were hanging out in the back of the auditorium discussing his installation and his 1-to-1 iPad deployment, three fifth-grade boys came into the room. The first was nearly running and close to tears. The other two followed a bit behind and were hiding smiles and laughs behind hands. The first boy explained to Mr. K that he couldn't find his iPad and went on about getting in trouble at school and at home and having to pay for it. It was obvious the young boy was quite distraught.
Mr K calmed the boy down and sat down at the computer at the back of the room. He logged into HiveManager Online and asked the boy his name while he navigated to the Active Clients list. Because Mr. K had implemented Aerohive's PPSK authentication method he was able to look the student up by his name and find the "missing" iPad on the network. He then clicked the link to locate the iPad and showed the student the area that Aerohive's built-in location services said that the iPad was likely to be. If traditional triangulation algorithms cannot be used to provide a precise location (the tri in triangulation means 3 APs need to be seen, commonly at -65 RSSI or better) Aerohive uses RSSI to provide a proximity on the map to where a wireless device is likely to be.
The student was surprised and told Mr. K that the circle corresponded to his home room, where his book bag was but he was certain he had last used his iPad down the hall in a different room. As the first boy raced up the stairs to that classroom the other two boys followed, looking a bit more glum. The first student returned within five minutes, quite ebullient with his iPad in hand. He told Mr. K that it was in his book bag and thanked Mr. K for helping him find it. It turns out the two other boys had hidden the first student's iPad in the back of his own school bag as a prank.
This seems like a simple story of lost and found, but think about the implications if this tool was unavailable to Mr. K:
  • The boy would have continued to look in the wrong classroom and not found his iPad.
  • Once his next class started he would have been unable to participate due to not having his iPad.
  • This could have led to the beginnings of disciplinary actions at the school and/or his parents being contacted.
  • It could even have gone so far as the parents starting to figure out how to pay to replace the missing iPad.
Yes, the student would have eventually found his iPad in his backpack, but this process was significantly short circuited through the use of Aerohive's mapping service in HiveManager Online.
In the end, this fifth-grade student could have gotten into plenty of trouble due to a prank by a couple of fellow students. All of this was avoided due to a few simple clicks and some really cool technology, designed for a different industry completely, but utilized in an innovative manner.
I love my job!
School district moves away from controller, embraces 802.11ac
Many schools initially built Wi-Fi for convenience over capacity, and Lamar County School District in Mississippi was no exception. When the Director of Technology needed to meet requirements for BYOD and density, it became quickly apparent that the District needed to move away from the controller to accommodate its 1:1 plans and future technology goals.
As the fastest growing district in Mississippi, the District achieved quite an upgrade with Aerohive. Not only could schools handle density, but the District was one of the first Aerohive customers to deploy 802.11ac in the nation. Lamar County is also using Aerohive features like Social Login with Google Classroom for easy authentication.
Check out more about the deployment in the full case study here.
How to configure Microsoft NPS to pass user profile attributes to an Aerohive AP
In this how-to video, Aerohive Principal Systems Engineer Rich Korb explains how to configure Microsoft Network Policy Server (NPS) to pass user profile attributes to an Aerohive AP.  This is a fantastic way to consolidate SSIDs.  Based on the security group membership of the user, the AP will place the user into the correct user profile, determined by the attribute passed back from NPS.  This forces the user to be placed into specific VLANs and assigned specific firewall and QoS policies dependent on their security group membership in Active Directory.
Many organizations face the demands of providing comprehensive mission-critical wireless coverage, often across multiple office locations, within a tight budget and managed by a nimble IT team. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) had challenges with a network that was end-of-life and difficult to manage, and needed to expand Wi-Fi coverage across their two campuses, resident housing units and at its Ocean Science Exhibit Center
With researchers and staff often needing outdoor coverage at its location near Cape Cod, reliable and comprehensive coverage was key, as well as a network solution that offered enterprise features, enabling Wi-Fi for large conferences and powering interactive kiosks for visitors at the Center.
Take a look at the innovative ways WHOI has deployed Aerohive in the full case study here.
