Solving the personal BYOD and guest access challenge

We are excited about the new Aerohive iOS app. Why? Because it brings the ID Manager service to your iOS device. Now you can easily register guest and personal devices and grant temporary access to your organization’s Wi-Fi network. Secure network credentials are created instantly, for immediate network access.

ID Manager for iOS represents a set of use cases and workflows that depict our vision and direction for ID Manager. In addition, the app was developed using the ID Manager public REST APIs released this past summer.

More importantly, ID Manager for iOS allows us to understand and test how we can better use mobile technologies and challenge the notion of the desktop as the design center.

Let’s take a little closer look at ID Manager for iOS to better understand some use cases.

Overall, the ID Manager for iOS app supports two basic use cases:

Guest accessThe guest access workflow follows the same guest workflows found in ID Manager. Basically, select Guest Type, fill out Guest Form, and send credentials to the guest.

Personal BYOD: Personal BYOD is a completely new workflow and demonstrates how the ID Manager REST APIs can be used to create unique, tuned experiences.

The personal BYOD workflow is streamlined since the employee is authenticated via Active Directory, therefore, there is no need to fill out the traditional guest form. We still maintain the use of Guest Types for password policy. A new twist is allowing the employee to name the credential. This helps us to establish a mechanism where the employee and IT administrator can reference the credential name, aka, tag.

Another unique capability is the Previous Keys command. It remembers the credentials you have created for guests and yourself, and provide a quick mechanism to reissue keys. This demonstrates an important concept we will continue to advance over time, that is, leveraging the data collected by ID Manager to streamline workflows, such as reissuing credentials.

If you use Aerohive ID Manager, I invite you to take a closer look at ID Manager for iOS. The app is distributed on the App Store (US, UK, AU, NZ, NL, CA, IR) and allows you to extend Aerohive ID Manager’s Employee Sponsor capabilities to iOS devices.
