Aerohive is pleased once again to recognize International Women's Day, celebrated this year on Sunday, March 8. This year's theme is "Make It Happen", bringing awareness to achievements of women all over the world, and pushing for greater equality.
As women, we are lucky to live here in the good ol' USA. The country has come along way since women were given the right to vote back in 1919 but there is still progress to be made!
Today we honor women at the Hive and around the globe - whatever you do - let’s celebrate women!
We are carrying on our tradition to recognize women here at Aerohive who contribute to our success. So, here's to these women at the Hive who 'make it happen'!
Clair Chou, Senior Cost Accountant
Joined Aerohive in: September 2013
Personal quality that helps Clair succeed at Aerohive: Dependable and enthusiastic.
Favorite superhero growing up: Wonder Woman. She is strong, a skilled fighter, positive and optimistic. And, I always wanted to have an invisible plane when I was a kid
If Clair could make one change in the world, she would: A cure for cancer. Nowadays, many people including my family and friends are suffering or have died from cancer. The chemotherapy is painful and there is no guarantee for the patient to survive from cancer so if I could make one change in the world, it would be finding a cure.
Fun Fact: I love making dessert and sewing projects.
Maura Fleming, Director, Legal Services
Joined Aerohive in: December 2013.
Personal quality that helps Maura succeed at Aerohive: Knowledge and understanding are important to me. I love to learn.
Favorite superhero growing up: Wonder Woman. She was a strong woman and a hero.
If Maura could make one change in the world, she would: That each day everyone would have a good meal, a warm place to sleep and a good friend by their side.
Maura's favorite thing about Aerohive: I get to work with a lot of nice, very smart people.
Valerie Junger, VP, Human Resources
Joined Aerohive in: January 2015
Personal quality that helps Valerie succeed at Aerohive: Prior experience is very relevant to the challenges Aerohive is currently facing. In addition, I am flexible and able to both work on a strategic and tactical level.
Favorite superhero growing up: I’m from Belgium and my favorite superheroes were Asterix (a French cartoon character) or Tintin (also a cartoon character). I also used to read a graphic novel series about a woman motorcycle racer. I can’t remember her name or the title of the series, but coming from a big motor sport racing family and having spent a lot of time as a child and teen at the race track at various events, this character was a great inspiration to me.
If Valerie could make one change in the world, she would: Fix poverty and give everyone economic opportunity. To me, this is the main reason why people turn to violence and extremism.
Fun fact and Valerie's favorite thing about Aerohive: I ride motorcycles, I love to cook, and I have a tattoo! My favorite things about Aerohive are the people and our culture. We have a lot of kind, responsible people who want to do the right thing and an open culture willing to examine itself. There is nothing more critical for organizational success.
Kyausha Lewis, Sr. Marketing Operations & Digital Marketing Manager
Joined Aerohive in: January 2015
Personal quality that helps Kyausha succeed at Aerohive: Being an encourager. Laughter (nothing like a good laugh to lighten a stressful day). Sheer determination (must have 'can do' attitude to get it done!).
Favorite superhero growing up: My real life super hero is my mom. My TV super heroes would be Wonder Woman and the Bionic Woman.
If Kyausha could make one change in the world, she would: My vision of changing the world is to change the mindset of people from 'defeated' to 'can do'! I’d love to start an inner city business consultancy and apprenticeship program to help people succeed and be more than they ever imagined.
Kyausha's favorite thing about Aerohive: The people and the culture. From interview to the day I started, the people here are collaborative, approachable, hard-working and sharp. Most companies work diligently to build a culture and a community that’s natural and genuine here at Aerohive.
Fan Lin, Product Line Manager
Joined Aerohive in: December 2014
Personal quality that helps Fan succeed at Aerohive: Holding on to purpose. I want to be a better person in many ways, including but not limited to, being a better coworker and friend, and a competent product management professional. I want to propel the product evolution and innovation, and grow with the product and the team along the way. These purposes get me in the office early in the morning everyday, help me think ahead and set agendas to make things happen, and encourage me to help out my coworkers, and keep a humble attitude and listen to feedback.
Favorite superhero growing up: Ms. Lang Ping. She was the former center of Chinese Women’s Volleyball National Team in the 1980s and led the team to win the Gold Medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. She was the head coach of the Chinese national team for 1995-1998 and later became the head coach of the US National Team. Lang’s perseverance and courage deeply inspired me ever since I was a little kid.
If Fan could make one change in the world, she would: Build vegetable farms on the roofs of high-rise buildings in big cities in China. I think this can help improve air and food quality.
Fan's favorite thing about Aerohive: We celebrate many holidays together here. We truly work hard and play hard.
Natasha Singh, Lead Opportunity Development Representative
Joined Aerohive in: April 2012
Personal quality that helps Natasha succeed at Aerohive: I’m known to have tough skin and being in sales this takes me a LONG way!
Favorite superhero growing up: Batman – I just loved how he was mortal yet still a badass taking care of business.
If Natasha could make one change in the world, she would: If I could make one change in the world it would be that there is a mandatory dance hour every day! Who wouldn’t want to just dance!?
Fun Fact: I'm actually 4’11” but I’ve been in denial since I was 16 and my driver's license says 5’0”. What’s wrong with rounding up?!
Joanna Wang, Buyer, Direct/Indirect Procurement
Joined Aerohive in: December 2014
Personal quality that helps Joanna succeed at Aerohive: Collaboration, integrity and optimism.
Favorite superhero growing up: Superman was the first superhero I knew. Apart from his smart outfit, intelligence, power and responsibility, he was always at the right place at the right time, doing the right thing. This always inspires me to be a better person.
If Joanna could make one change in the world, she would: If I were able to make one change in the world, I would like all people communicate through their mind instead of language, in this way everyone is honest to each other, and the world can become easier and more peaceful.
Joanna's favorite thing about Aerohive: The concept of the hive and our bee mascot is vivid and interesting. Casual and friendly environment.
Metka Dragos, Sr. Product Marketing Manager
And, last but not least, we polled Aerohive to submit some of their favorite quotes from women and we chose Metka's submission.
“We’ve all had a heartache. And so my journey now is to find some sort of grace in the face of this defeat. And I can look at the journey, not just destination. I can feel proud, I can stand here in front of you tonight and say I was courageous.”
- Diana Nyad, who has made four attempts to complete what would be a record-breaking swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage
Why the quote resonates: I've dived, climbed, skied and run places that very few men dared to, because I was told, all my life, that women are weak and cannot do anything, not move things, not be creative and not have ideals.
Check out some more great quotes from these amazing women:
“Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost.” - Helen Keller
"If you get, give. If you learn, teach." - Maya Angelou
“A champion is afraid of losing. Everyone else is afraid of winning.” - Billie Jean King
“Don’t mistake politeness for lack of strength.” - Sonya Sotomayor
“Differences can be a strength rather than a handicap.” - Condoleezza Rice
“Done is better than perfect.” - Sheryl Sandberg
