In my last post, How Aerohive ID Manager and PPSK securely manage BYOD, I discussed the need for visibility over employee-owned devices that are for both personal and business purposes, and how Aerohive's ID Manager helps organizations address this issue.
In this blog, we are taking a look at four additional use cases where ID Manager is recommended:
- Use Case #1: Private PSK (PPSK) is recommended for augmenting WLAN deployments that authenticate clients with WPA or WPA2 Enterprise (802.1X/EAP), but have some devices that:
- Support WPA or WPA2 Personal, but do not support WPA or WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1X/EAP
- Do not support opportunistic key caching (OKC) for seamless roaming
- Use Case #2: Recommended use in place of using traditional PSKs for environments that do not have a WLAN deployment simply not using 802.1X/EAP
- Use Case #3: Recommended for secure credentials with guest WLANs
- Use Case #4: BYOD – On-boarding personal and/or company issued mobile devices with Client Management
ID Manager bridges the gap for greater security
ID Manager and PPSK introduce individual keys that bridge the gap between certificates and the most common type of security for Wi-Fi networks, Pre-Shared Key. It also introduces increased security without IT incurring the overhead and increased support burden of certificates.
ID Manager provides secure, profile-based access for thousands of users anywhere in the world. The profiles are fully configurable, allowing IT to determine not only where the device can access the network but when and for how long- and with an added simplicity in the cloud. So without any additional hardware or software to install or maintain, IT can easily on-board and manage short-term guests to fully-secure employee BYOD or personal devices.
This is a visual representation of the easy guest and personal device access management available with ID Manager. As you can see, you hit a welcome screen and then choose how you (or a guest) would like to receive the access key.
Additional considerations for ID Manager
There is also a great reporting function embedded within ID Manager. The IT admin can:
- Monitor the number of authentication requests accepted and rejected.
- View an accounting log to track user data transfer.
- View an audit log for monitoring administrative and operator usage of the system.
- Track session time.
It is important to ask a few key questions in order to know if ID Manager is the right solution for you:
- Are personal devices allowed in your organization?
- How does IT support personal devices?
- Do you want to have more granular control of guest users entering your network?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, it would be a good idea to request an ID Manager demo and/or trial.
So overall, Aerohive’s ID Manager makes BYOD for guests and employees easier to manage with the simplicity of PSK but the uniqueness and security of a certificate. The goal is to allow IT to scale without sacrificing control.
